RSMT Bio-Tech
Programmes - “Building Global Standard Competence”
RSMT delivers Biotechnology programme distinct from that of
other education providers. Located in a state of the art building
which incorporates both teaching and research facilities together,
the School is unique in having industry collaboration with
leading Biotechnology & Bioinformatics companies and association
with National Level Biotechnology organizations – ABLE
Bangalore, AIBA New Delhi and BCIL New Delhi. We aim to nurture
biotechnological professionals in a systematic and step-by-step
approach, which goes from the easy to the difficult. Through
the well-designed courses and modules, students may form their
own interest in numerous biotechnological research areas.
RSMT targets at industrial application, which may guide fundamental
academic studies toward the mastery of research. With regard
to research areas, the Institute attaches high priority to
the local technological industries that can be developed at
present or in the future. In response to the overall development
of the country, the Institute also aims to cultivate advanced
professionals of biotechnology for the establishment of “Royal
School Bio-Technology Corridor”, in the future. Rigidly
defined, the principle development direction of the Institute
is on research and application of Biotechnology. Upon the
completion of the course, the career opportunities for our
graduates will be greatly increased due to the collaboration
with the industrial circle. Our graduates will have excellent
job prospects.

Advisers of Studies: In all faculties there is a Senior
or Chief Adviser of Studies working with a cohort of Advisers
of Studies who are academic staff and who serve to advise
students about academic matters and, where necessary, about
social and personal issues.
Computing Facilities: RSMT offers
a wide range of computing facilities, including web-based
email and internet access, to all students. The Computing
Service runs the Common Student Computing Environment (CSCE).
This is a standard computer set-up designed to make life easier
for you. Computing Service also runs a helpdesk for students.
Student IT Literacy Programme:
All new undergraduate and postgraduate students are required
to take a Certificate of Basic IT Competence, Some students
take a one-off test in order to achieve the Certificate while
others may need to take a course in order to achieve the necessary
level of competence. The IT Education Department also offers
Enhancement Units to students who have gained the IT Certificate,
focusing on such activities as laying out a dissertation,
designing a presentation, preparing a CV, using online databases,
or creating web pages.
The Student Learning Services:
The Student Learning Service aims to support all students
and enhance their learning. Each faculty has a designated
Effective Learning Adviser who works with departments, providing
study skills advice for specific courses. The Advisers also
lead general study skills workshops, open to all students,
on topics such as essay writing, effective reading techniques,
note-making skills and preparation for exams. Students can
arrange a one-to-one consultation to discuss strategies for
successful learning at RSMT.
The Language Centre: The Language
Centre provides resources for teaching and learning languages.
There are two main areas of activity: Modern Foreign Languages
(MFL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL). The MFL courses
are part of the Institution Wide Language Programme, which
prepare students to go abroad.
Career Service: The Careers Service,
is available to give friendly and impartial career planning
support throughout your course of study. Whatever your chosen
subjects, and whatever stage you are at in your studies, Careers
Service staff can help you prepare as effectively as possible
for the transition from institute to the workplace, or to
further study.
Career Opportunities: Biotechnology
is the application of techniques and processes that utilize
biological systems for the efficient and useful production
of materials to serve human needs in agriculture, medicine,
industry and daily life. The science of 'Biotechnology' is
taking rapid strides. By integrating life sciences, biochemistry,
molecular biology, chemical engineering and computer sciences,
biotechnology can have profound impact in the fields of agriculture,
medicine, animal husbandry and environmental protection. The
past several years have witnessed a great conversion of this
science into economic benefits due to its applications in
many areas. The science of biotechnology is not limited to
laboratories but is emerging as an industrial revolution worldwide.
Apart from the potential for the industrial growth, biotechnology
is also emerging as a 'technology of' hope' for society, especially
in developing countries. The potential of biotechnology in
producing low cost medicines, nutrition rich food, remediation
of environmental degradation, improvement of live stock breeds
and health, among many others are well recognized.
The aim of this MSc Biotechnology course is to advance the
understanding and transfer of knowledge at the forefront of
biotechnology for its useful application in research, industry,
commerce and society. Biotechnology is predicted to be one
of the piviotal forces of the 21st century. The courses take
a multidisciplinary approach designed to provide students
with knowledge and skills to be the interface between science
and industry. The biotechnology industry is an important and
growing industrial sector is considered by many to be key
to the future of manufacturing. Biotechnologists study plant,
animal and microbial sciences, underpinned by biochemistry,
genetics, computing and some applied aspects of agriculture,
environmental science and food science.
In recent years, demand for biotechnologists has increased
through the many developments in the industrial application
and exploitation of biochemical processes, like the manufacture
and use of enzymes, medical diagnostic reagents and therapeutic
agents, and agricultural applications. Biological waste treatment
is becoming increasingly important as legislative requirements
become more stringent. Graduates are capable in assisting
the industry in all of these issues and have a role in production,
technical sales and research and development. In addition
to the career opportunities in the biotechnological industries,
the academic training our graduates receive equips them for
positions in other industries, commerce and Government service.
The Biotechnology programme aims to:
• Provide a course containing integrated periods of
industrial training allowing students to experience and apply
the skills developed during the course. The education provides
an excellent basis for your future career. • Provide
a programme of education which will enable its graduates to
enter a career in the biotechnology-based industries as scientists
or technologists in production and research and development.
• Provide a broadly based scientific and technological
education whose graduates can also enter a career in other
areas of applied biology or processing.
How you learn: An integrated
programme of lectures, tutorials, seminars, laboratory assignments
and case studies are used to enhance your knowledge and understanding
and enable you to make progress. Both the research project
route and the mini-project route are designed to allow you
to apply your studies and gain the maximum benefit from them.
How you are assessed: A combination
of written submissions, presentations, laboratory assignments
and formal examinations are used throughout the programme.
Graduates of this programme have:•
A firm understanding of the theory behind the basic disciplines
of biotechnology; • knowledge and skills in biotechnological
techniques and methods for solving technical problems; •
Knowledge and skills in their selected specialisation; Skills
to solve complex problems using an integrated approach.
