Recent advances in bioanalytical technology, coupled with
huge multi-national initiatives such as the human genome project
and rice genome project are creating vast amounts of biological
data. With such massive investment in data collection, the
world is now looking forward to the fruits of this investment
- such as new drugs, new treatments, better crops, environmental
benefits, and a much better understanding of disease and biology
in general.
This fast-growing field offers exciting career opportunities
for those forwardthinking people who are ready to grasp the
challenge - people who understand both the biological and
computing aspects of this science. As computational approaches
become a standard part of the biologist’s armory, those
individuals with the latest IT skills are bound to have a
career advantage.
Bioinformatics
- the application of information technology to biological
problems - is key to achieving these goals, and the doorway
to a career in a multi-million pound industry.
Exciting and dynamic as this young industry is, it already
suffers from a major skills gap. As biology shifts ever more
from a wet science to a computational science, the demand
for people who understand both the biological and computing
aspects is increasing all the time. As few such people exist,
the candidate that employers in the bioinformatics market
are searching for is rarely available.
Overall Aims
This course aims to equip life science graduates with the
computational skills and awareness needed to archive, analyse
and interpret the vast amounts of biological data now becoming
available. The MSc is designed to meet the fast-growing international
demand of industries such as pharmaceuticals and biotechnology
for competent staff who are skilled in both biological sciences
and information technology. The course is also a route to
further qualifications or a career in research.
Why this Course
Totally integrated approach -
common themes run through the course. Modules concerning the
application and commercial aspects of bioinformatics help
put the science into context, ensuring that the MSc is much
more than the sum of its parts
Dedicated teaching team –
all our teaching staff are actively involved in research and
development in their area, usually in collaboration with industry
or key research organisations
Hands-on experience - of industry-standard
bioinformatics software tools and databases.
Coherent and Integrated Approach
Biology, management, information application… these
are all integral to the young field of bioinformatics. Responding
to the needs and demands of industry, we have built an MSc
that is as stretching and as focused as the marketplace its
graduates will enter.
Course Objectives
On successful completion of this MSc you will:
·
be well-acquainted with the function, structure and applications
of databases
·
be able to critically assess the most common analytical techniques
used in the acquisition of biological data
·
have utilised a number of different bioinformatics software
tools and interpreted their output
·
have a well-rounded overview of bioinformatics in the pharmaceutical,
healthcare, agricultural, and other markets
·
know how to program in Java and PERL, two of the most popular
programming languages in the bioinformatics community
·
be able to utilise molecular modelling software to visualise
and simulate molecular interactions
